Computers do the funniest things
The other night a dear friend of mine confessed as to how he had walked into a trap that had been unintentionally laid for him by someone else. He took the bait and single-handedly brought down the entire email system of one the world’s best known investment banks for 5-6 hours. This left approximately 6000 (or was it 60,000 – never mind it was pot loads) angry bankers without the means to email witty jokes to each other. The person in question shall remain nameless but needless to say he watched in horror as his career barrelled over the rapids and settled into a silent eddy of hissing email servers.
Meanwhile, the other day when launching Digital Agency Search we had set up the new email addresses and I had dutifully changed the MX records (a record that specifies where email should be routed) but the server that was hosting the domain thought it was also hosting the email, and was not being over-ridden. As such many of the early emails to us pinged. A number of friends brought our attention to this – but it worked internally so we carelessly blamed user error.
How foolish we were. My friend has retained his job and Digital Agency Search is now fully open for business. We both should have known better, but computers are unsympathetic beasts. Not to be tampered with by the err…simple.
